Like that of the Apostle Paul, who preached under the fire of persecution, John Flavel's ministry, declared illegal under the Act Of Uniformity of 1662, continued faithfully for the good of his people. For 25 years it went on "amid persecutions, obstacles and interruptions...as opportunity could be gained in private dwellings, in obscure neighbourhoods, or in the seclusion of the forest". Finally, under royal decree, worship without molestation was restored and John Flavel ministered in a new, large church erected by his affectionate people.
